   philologist, linguist
   Born in Landau, Bavaria, Breal studied first in Germany under noted linguists, including Franz Bopp. Bréal became an instructor of comparative grammar at the collège de France (1864) and also served as secretary to the Linguistic society of Paris (1868). In his major work, Essai de sémantique (1897), he developed a new branch of linguistics studies—semantics—"a science of signification," or the study of the evolution of words and their meaning. As the translator of Franz Bopp's major work (Grammaire comparée, 1866-74), Bréal attempted to synthesize the formal functionalism of German linguistics with the French rationalist tradition. Bréal was also an ardent student of mythology.
